The first stop of Paul in Europe
The Pew of St. Paul is located on the northern side of Samothrace. It is a recent monument, built in 2008.
According to the Acts of the Apostles (16:9-15), Paul travelled in 49 AD from Troas to Neapolis, as Kavala was then called. His boat stopped first in Samothrace where he stayed overnight and he spoke with the residents.
On the road Kamariotissa-Thermes Loutra, a semicircular peristyle with four mosaics and the quote from the Acts of the Apostles, translated into many languages represent the passage of Paul from the island.
A short distance from the monument are the ruins of a temple of the Early Christian period (4th-7th century AD). Although there is no indication that it is connected to Paul's visit, many believe that it is one of the oldest Christian temples.
