Sitagroi

A prehistoric settlement in Sitagroi

On the banks of the Aggitis River, archeologists discovered one of the oldest prehistoric settlements in Greece in a mound. It was not inhabited continuously but the phases dated by the scientists cover a period from the Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age, i.e. from 5500 to 2200 BC.

The houses of the Neolithic settlement were built on piles of tree trunks. The inhabitants were engaged in agriculture, livestock farming and hunting. Various objects have been found, such as vases with written and incised decoration, figurines of people and animals, tools made of bone and stone, seals and many others.  To meet their daily needs they wove linen and wool.

From the late Neolithic phase, jewelry such as pins, copper and gold beads have been found. These were probably made in the settlement as shown by a metal smelting vessel.

The findings of the excavations are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Drama.
