In the ruins of an ancient castle
North of the settlement of Adriani in Drama, on the hill of Ai-Giannis, lie the ruins of an unidentified castle. This position overlooks the entire plain of Drama and offered control over the passage to Mount Falakro. As there are neither written sources nor excavations have been carried out at the site, the dating of the castle is not safe. It is considered certain that it was in use during the Byzantine period, but it may have been built earlier by the Macedonian kings.
The enclosure in some places is preserved at a height of 3 m. and there are traces of buildings within it. The church of Ai-Giannis was built from building materials from the castle, and it was the katholikon (the main church) of a monastery, active during the Turkish occupation.
