Folklore Museum of Didymoteicho

Relics in Didymoteicho

The Hatzirvasani building, built at the beginning of the 20th century, is a remarkable example of eclecticist architecture. It was originally built as a residence with a shop on the ground floor. Later the shop was converted into a branch of the Agricultural Bank and the first floor as the residence of its director.

After its acquisition by the Ministry of Culture in 1975, it was granted to the Cultural Association of Didymoteicho. This laid the foundations for the housing of the collections of the Folklore Collection that had existed since 1966. With the cooperation of the Municipality, which undertook the work on the building, the Folklore Museum was completed and opened its doors to the public.

Its collections include 2,500 exhibits including ecclesiastical, agricultural and other items. Some of them are traditional costumes, household textiles, icons, ecclesiastical items and utensils, tools of farming and other trades. The traditional jewelry in the Museum's collection is a remarkable piece of silversmithing. The archival material is of great importance as it includes documents from the Zappeion School of Adrianople.
