Reviving a Traditional Sarakatsani Settlement
In Glykoneri, very close to the wetland of Lake Vistonida, is the Museum Traditional Settlement of Sarakatsani, an ethnic Greek population subgroup, traditionally transhumant shepherds. The settlement consists of five circular huts and a teacher's hut. That is where the teacher lived and taught the children of the settlement. All the huts of the museum settlement are made of long green wood and hard straw. These were the natural materials used by the Sarakatsani since the old times.
The church of St. John the Baptist was built in the settlement. On 23 June, the day of the celebration of St. John, the custom of klidonas is revived.
The museum settlement was built in 1989 and took its present form in 1992.
