The Judas tree (lat. Cercis siliquastrum) is a deciduous tree or shrub with characteristic and impressive purple flowers blooming from March to April. It is widespread from South Europe and the Mediterranean countries to Southwest Asia. Today, it is also used as an ornamental species in gardens.
Its name is possibly a corrupted derivation from the French common name, Arbre de Judée, meaning the tree of Judea, referring to the country where the tree used to be common.
