The oriental hornbeam (lat. Carpinus orientalis) is a deciduous tree or small shrub, that is native to south-east Europe and Asia; it is particularly common in Greece, especially in the central and northern part of the country. It grows in mountainous areas at an altitude of up to 1400 meters. In the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, it occurs in areas such as the Aesthetic Forest of Amygdaeona, Kavala, and the islands of Samothrace, and Thassos.
It is threatened by logging and overgrazing.
