The checker tree (lat. Sorbus torminalis) is a deciduous tree, that is widespread in Europe (from Great Britain to Poland and south to the Mediterranean countries), in North Africa, and West Asia. In Greece, it occurs all over the mainland, in forests at low altitudes. In particular, in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, checker trees grow in areas such as Avas, Mesimvria, Rizia, the forest of Dadia, and the island of Samothrace.
