Fort Nymfea

Reliving glorious moments of the 1940s war

Fort Nymfea was constructed between 1936 and 1940. It was part of the fortification works carried out by Ioannis Metaxas for the defensive protection of Greece. In 1941, after a battle, the fort was conquered by the German army.

Today it serves as a military museum dedicated to the WW II and the battles fought at the fort. The museum exhibits photographs from the battles, newspapers and other visual material related to the fort, relics, weapons and ammunition as well as dioramas of the halls. The rich audiovisual material recreates the atmosphere of the battles. A ceremony is held in the fort's memorial on 6 April each year, the day the fort was taken over by German troops.

To visit the museum, permission is required. Access is from Komotini via the road Komotini-Nymfaia.
