A Byzantine castle with roots in antiquity
The castle dates back to antiquity. It was built by the Macedonians to protect the mines of Paggaio. It was later abandoned as the mines stopped operating. The raids of the Serbs in the 12th century dictated the development of the castle. This project was undertaken by Alexios Vranas, Byzantine general of Emperor Andronikos I Komnenos. Vranas reconstructed and fortified the castle and thus it was named after him, Vranokastro as it is otherwise known. The occupation of the area by the Ottomans in 1383 marked the end of the castle. Every year on the feast of Saint Theodoros the residents of Paleochori go up to the castle to worship at the iconostasis that is located there in honor of the saint.
Access to the castle is relatively easy.
