Horse and Bisaltes warrior

Silver octadrachm of Bisaltae with a Bisaltes warrior and his horse, 475-465 BC

On the obverse of this silver octadrachm there is a horse and, behind it, a nude warrior. He wears petasos (a type of broad brimmed hat, often worn by the horsemen). He holds two spears in his left hand and the reins of his horse with his right. The inscription CIΣA-LTIKΩN can be read. It is about the Thracian tribe of Bisaltae that occupied the territory between the rivers Echedoros (modern Gallikos river) and Strymon. On the reverse side, a quadripartite incuse square is depicted.
