The Acropolis of Kimmeria
Three kilometers north of Kimmeria at an altitude of 543 m. the ruins of the ancient fortress are preserved. It is not known exactly when it was built but it is certain that it was used during the Hellenistic (336 - 30 BC) and Roman (30 BC - 330 AD) periods. The walls are 2m wide and their surviving height is 3m. The fortification has a perimeter of 268 m in length and follows the morphology of the terrain. From the castle the view is breathtaking. Xanthi, the river Kosynthos and the acropolis of Xanthea on the top of Avgo can be seen. Inside the castle there are ruins of various buildings and numerous ceramic shells.
Access to the site from Kimmeria is difficult. A vehicle suitable for off-road travel is required as the dirt road is rough. Part of the route before the castle requires a hike of about 20 minutes.
