Acropolis of Kremasto-Ergani

The prehistoric castle in Kremasto

On the hill Kremastos Vrachos (Asar-tepe) between the villages of Ergani and Xylagani there is an acropolis dating between 1200-900 BC (late Bronze Age - early Iron Age). The walls that form the fortification have a perimeter of 1300m., 1.40m. thick and are preserved at a maximum height of 1.30m. The arched, ellipsoid building at the highest point, which was probably the ruler's residence, is particularly noteworthy. The pottery found in the area has incised decoration and dates back to the 13th-12th century BC.

To access the acropolis, follow the road from Komotini to Maronia. At km 14 turn left on the road to Ergani and Nea Petra. At 17 km a forest dirt road starts for 3 km and then a path and then a path leads to the top of the hill. Guidance from a resident of the settlement who knows the area is necessary.
