Akontisma Acropolis

From the ancient to the interwar Akontisma

The ruins of a fortified ancient city can be seen on the hill close to Nea Karvali. The walls of this acropolis rise up to 5 m in some places. The main entrance must have been on the north side, where two fortified towers are preserved. Another gate and a tower were discovered on the south side of the citadel. Archaeological finds date the construction of the walls to the end of the 4th century BC.

This city continued to be inhabited in subsequent periods and is identified with Akontisma, which is mentioned in written Roman sources as a station on Via Egnatia. Its location was of strategic importance as it controlled the entire surrounding area as well as the passage from west to east. Drastic additions to the walls were made after 1913, with the liberation of Kavala from the Bulgarians. Then trenches were constructed and new additions with machine guns were incorporated into the ancient fortifications. These defensive works were also used during the World War I.
