Acropolis Platanias, since the beginning of the 1st millennium BC.
Close to the settlement of Platania lies the hill known as Kales or Acropolis. Archaeological excavations have unearthed weapons, coins, jewelry, figurines, glass vessels, sherds and other artifacts. The findings date the human presence from the Iron Age (1050-800 BC) until the 6th century. A.D. The fortification precinct dates back to the Roman period and the abandonment of the site is estimated during the Early Christian period, perhaps due to barbaric invasions.
The area is accessible from Platania, at the intersection after Thamnoto.
