The river-god Strymon

On the reverse of this bronze coin dated to the time of the Roman emperor Commodus, the river-god Strymon is depicted reclining. He is bearded and semi naked, only a himation covers his lower body and his left hand. He holds a branch in his right hand. One can read the inscription ΟΥΛΠΙΑϹ ΠΑVΤΑΛΙΑϹ (of Ulpia Pautalia), which is the official name of the city. On the obverse side the bust of the emperor Commodus is depicted.
