Learning the folk art and tradition of Samothrace
The two-story Folklore Museum of Samothrace exhibits works of folk art and other everyday traditional objects of the island. It is housed in an old house of the 19th century and is located next to the church of the Assumption of the Virgin. In the museum that operates from the Municipality of Samothrace, the folk tradition is revived, the arts that were lost or forgotten over the years, but also representations of rooms of past centuries from Samothrace.
On the ground floor tools for farmers and stockbreeders, items for processing wool and cotton and home-made garments such as looms are on display.
The floor of the museum has been transformed into the typical multi-purpose room of a house, as was customary in the old days. In a space without partitions, all the functions of the household were served. The kitchen with the fireplace for the preparation of the food, next to it the area that served as living room and further the bed and linen operating as the bedroom. The visitor will see other later elements and furniture from bourgeois houses before the Second World War. Chests, textiles, other household decoration and utensils reconstruct the image of the urban and the rural house. On the walls, "marhamades", woven silk and cotton towels are hung, dishes and various photographs of previous centuries complete the representation. There is also a wood-carved iconostasis from the early 20th century with portable icons. The journey in the folk tradition of Samothrace ends with the Samothrace traditional costumes.
