The griffon vulture (lat. Gyps fulvus) is a bird of prey. The griffon is the commonest vulture species in Greece. Once almost numerous and widespread all over the mainland and on many islands, the species has suffered a serious population decline.
The vulture establishes nesting colonies and has a preference for open areas with vertical or steep slopes, gorges, and similar ecosystems with protruding rocks. It lives in semi-mountainous and mountainous areas, where it takes advantage of livestock activities.
It feeds exclusively on large or medium-sized ungulates.
