The eastern imperial eagle (lat. Aquila heliaca) is a large bird of prey that breeds in Southeastern Europe and in West and Central Asia. Its population is declining. It is the rarest eagle species in Greece and one of the rarest birds of prey throughout the Mediterranean countries. It feeds on rodents, reptiles, and other small animals it catches with its strong claws and beak. Each pair lays 2-3 eggs. In recent years, the dramatic decline in the number of these beautiful and so useful birds is due to poaching, agricultural poisons, and deforestation.
