Hannah of Traianoupolis

The Ottoman inn in Traianoupolis

This building, located 14 km north-east of Alexandroupolis, is known as the Hani of Evrenos Bey. It is one of the oldest Ottoman buildings in the Balkans as it dates back to the 14th century. Hani (which means inn), was built on the Egnatia by Gazi Evrenos Beg or Hadji Gazi Evrenos between 1370 and 1390. The area known as Loutra Traianoupolis (Traianoupolis Baths) was known for its thermal baths as early as the Roman period when Emperor Trajan (98-117 AD) founded the city on the Via Egnatia.

Next to the Hani were the hammams (Ottoman baths), built in the 16th century, apparently in the same place where the Roman baths were located. The surviving monument is rectangular with external dimensions of 39x13m and it is roofed with an arch. Parts of an early Christian pulpit (4th-6th century AD) can be seen in Hannah. At its base, a 10th or 11th century Christogram can be discerned, indicating its reuse.

Since 1964, new hydrotherapy facilities had been in operation, which were renovated in 1995. Their operation was discontinued in 2019.
