The Acropolis of Thassos was built on the hill east of Limenas and imposing walls were erected for its best protection. The entrance was secured by many gates at various points of the walls, such as the gate of Zeus and Hera. Inside the Acropolis the sanctuaries of Apollo Pythios and Athena the Patron were erected, whereas the open-air sanctuary of Pan was carved into a cavity in the rock.
The relief of the god Pan dates back to the 4th century BC. During the Byzantine period a castle was built in the sanctuary of Apollo. In the turbulent years of the 15th century, the Genoese Jiacopo Gattilusio conquered Thassos and rebuilt the walls, using many of the architectural parts of ancient temples.
The venue is open to the public.
