The village of Marasia in the Evros regional district is located at the northeast borders of Greece with Turkey. Built at the point where Ardas river meets Evros river, Marasia stands at the crossroads where Evros enters the Turkish territory. It is one of the oldest villages in the area and it is mentioned in 15th century documents. Very close to Marasia, on the slope of a low hill and an area called Fylakes (meaning "guards"), a settlement of the early Iron Age with valuable archeological findings has been discovered.
The village became known to the wider public in 2007, after the Academy of Athens honored the "Lady of Marasia", Vassiliki Lampidou, who lived in the area and became a local symbol.
