Archaeological Site of Alyki

From the marble quarry to Alyki

In the southeastern part of Thassos, on the eastern bay of the Alyki peninsula, there are the ruins of an ancient sanctuary. In a short distance there is a cave with traces of human presence from the 7th century BC. During the early Christian era (4th-7th century AD) three Christian temples were built in the type of the basilica at the top of the hill:

  • The first basilica, built in 400 AD, is not visible as
  • a newer three-aisled basilica was built on it, in 500 AD, which was destroyed at the end of the 6th century.
  • Right next to it, to the south,  Another three-aisled wooden-roofed basilica was built in the 5th c. AD.

The area is named from the natural salt pans that were created after the extraction of the marble, almost at the height of the sea surface. When the water evaporates on the marble cavities, the salt remains.

The peninsula is a designated archeological site.
