From the marble quarry to Alyki
In the southeastern part of Thassos, on the eastern bay of the Alyki peninsula, there are the ruins of an ancient sanctuary. In a short distance there is a cave with traces of human presence from the 7th century BC. During the early Christian era (4th-7th century AD) three Christian temples were built in the type of the basilica at the top of the hill:
The area is named from the natural salt pans that were created after the extraction of the marble, almost at the height of the sea surface. When the water evaporates on the marble cavities, the salt remains.
The peninsula is a designated archeological site.
