In the administrative and religious center of ancient Thassos
In the northern part of the island, where the modern city developed, was the agora of ancient Thassos. This administrative and religious center was formed in the 6th century BC, based on the dating of the oldest constructions, but mainly from the 4th century BC. It continued with the construction of many public buildings and temples in the Roman times until its destruction by the invasion of the Herules, in 267 AD. Among the later construction interventions in the area two are the most predominant; the Basilica, dated in the beginning of the 5th century AD and built with material from the other buildings of the Ancient Agora, and the fortification of the port, at its northwestern end, constructed in the 14th century AD.
One of the most important buildings and places of the ancient agora was the square surrounded by administrative buildings, temples, altars, statues and small sanctuaries, such as the sanctuary of Hercules.
The area is accessible from the port of Limenas.
