The proud tower near Nea Peramos
Between Amphipolis and Nea Peramos, next to the national road Thessaloniki - Kavala, a medieval tower is still standing, dating to the Late Byzantine period, in the 14th century. The name "Tower of Apollonia" is due to a mistaken identification of the place with the ancient city of Apollonia. The tower was built at a crossroads between the two fortified Byzantine cities of Chrysopolis and Anaktoropolis and provides surveillance of the area between the estuary of Strymon and the Gulf of Eleftherai as well as the sea area between Thassos and Mount Athos.
The tower is preserved at a height of about 15 meters and its external dimensions are 10m. x 11m. It is surrounded by a four-sided enclosure that ends at the northeast corner of the tower. The entrance of the tower is at a height of 2m. above the ground creating a blind ground floor. The tower has four floors and a roof probably with ramparts. On the top floor there are two niches that belonged to the chapel of the tower. Arched windows open on all sides of the tower, while on the north and south sides there were sprinklers to protect the defenders in case of siege. Stones and bricks have mainly been used for the construction of the tower in two zones at the height of the 2nd and 3rd floor.
