The Byzantine church of Agios Panteleimon in Aggitis
The small church of Agios Panteleimon is located on the banks of the river Aggitis, just outside Prosotsani. Although the church received extended additions in the 20th century, it is clear from its architectural elements and its ceramic exterior decoration that it dates back to the early 14th century. This dating is also confirmed by a document of the year 1316 from the monastery of Megisti Lavra, where it is mentioned as Metochion (Dependent monastery). At a short distance from the temple, there are the ruins of a Byzantine building that could possibly be a tower.
The temple is made of river stones (cobbles) and plinths. The interior was decorated with frescoes but covered with lime at a later phase. According to Ottoman written sources, during the 15th and 16th centuries, there was a small settlement near the monastery.
