The building on Gounari Street was built between 1908-1909. The construction costs were covered by the inhabitants of the city and the family of the Macedonian warrior Pavlos Melas, designed by the architect Hatzimichalis. The construction of this building to house the schools of the Greek community during the turbulent period of the Macedonian Struggle was the result of the initiative of the Metropolitan bishop of Drama Chrysostom, whose statue stands outside the building. Today the building houses the 12th elementary school.
