An active city of antiquity next to the Via Egnatia
Built next to the Via Egnatia was the ancient Pistyros. It was originally founded as a trading outpost but developed into an active city. Its inhabitants were engaged in trade, metallurgy, winemaking and the exploitation of timber. The city walls that reached a height of 5 m are made of white marble of Thassos.
In recent years, excavations have been carried out during which various public administrative and religious buildings have been discovered. From the findings the settlement dates from the 7th BC until the 1st century BC when it was abandoned by its inhabitants due to floods of river Nestos and the embankments. Excavations are ongoing and are expected to bring to light many important findings.
