An important burial mound at Doxipara
Near the settlements of Mikri Doxipara and Zoni, four pits were discovered with the cremated remains of three men and a woman. They were members of a wealthy family who were cremated and buried on the same location over a period of time. Later, a tumulus with a diameter of 60m and height 7.5m was built on the tomb.
The burials date back to the Roman period, at the beginning of the 2nd c. A.D. and they were accompanied by numerous rich offerings such as weapons, jewelry, clay, glass and bronze vases, wooden boxes, bronze lamps, bronze lamp stands, lanterns etc. The carriages and the five horses found buried there are particularly impressive.
