The water buffalo (lat. Bubalus bubalis) is a large bovid, that has been known since antiquity. It stands for the taste and nutritional value of its meat and milk. In Greece, Lake Kerkini in Serres regional unit is the main breeding area for buffalos. However, in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, farmers are also involved in the breeding of buffalos in the area of lake Vistonida.
