The fire salamander (lat. Salamandra salamandra) is a nocturnal amphibian, one of the three salamander species found in Greece. Black with yellow spots, the fire salamander secretes a toxic liquid from glands it carries on the skin - if threatened. The spots on its skin warn its would-be predators of the toxic substances it secretes. These substances are harmless to humans but can cause irritation and other unpleasant symptoms in case of ingestion or contact with the skin.
Forested areas with streams and rivers as well as areas with high levels of humidity are its natural habitats.
