The aegolius (lat. Aegolius funereus) is a small, true owl species that is widespread in Eurasia. It is a type of screech owl that was considered to be a bird of ill omen. Its plumage is dark brown on the upper side of the body, with distinctive white splashes on the shoulder and smaller ones on the wings.
It lives and breeds in dense coniferous forests, usually near clearings and small swamps. On mount Rodopi, it has been recorded in mature coniferous and mixed forests, at an altitude of about 1600 meters, while it tends to avoid human activities.
