Montpellier maple (lat. Acer monspessulanum L.) is a deciduous tree that is found in various parts of Europe and the Mediterranean. It is widespread all over Greece and in the islands of Thrace and Samothrace. Its scientific name, Acer, is given to the whole genus after the hand-like shape of its leaves ends (Acer in Latin means sharp).
Maples usually have distinctive fruits with two leaves and two kernels in the middle; the fruits look like an insect with two large wings. Their wood is used in furniture production but also for making musical instruments.
