Samothrace is an island in the Thracian Sea (Northern Aegean Sea), a continuation of the Rhodope Mountains. The capital of the island is Chora.
It is an island with rich vegetation due to the waters running from Mount Saos, and with waterfalls of unique beauty. Samothrace is overgrown with olives, chestnuts, maples, cedars, and plane trees; extended forests of plane trees are also found on the island.
During antiquity, the island of Samothrace was an important religious center, a place where sacred ceremonies used to take place, often referred to as "Delos of the North Aegean". It holds an important place in the Hellenistic and Roman eras, whereas during the Middle Ages there was a decline.
Today, ruins of sacred buildings and landmarks scattered on the island testify to its history.
