The black stork (lat. Ciconia nigra) is a rare migratory bird, that belongs to the same family as the common stork or white stork. In Thrace, it is found in the areas of Avantas - Kirki, on the river Bosvozi, in farmlands around Dadia and Lefkimmi, as well as on the island of Samothrace.
It builds its nest away from settlements, usually on trees and sometimes on rocks, in semi-mountainous areas, with coniferous, deciduous, or mixed forests, or even in areas with micro cultivation; it prefers freshwater wetlands (streams, swamps, wetlands, etc.), where it typically looks for its food.
It feeds mainly on reptiles and amphibians (especially frogs), small mammals, and rarely on small birds.
Today, it is considered a threatened species and it is protected by law.
