The black-winged stilt (lat. Himantopus himantopus) is a widely distributed wader with characteristic black and white plumage and extremely long and thin legs. From a distance, it looks like a small stork.
It is widespread on all continents, especially in temperate climates. The European subspecies occur almost throughout the European continent as a migrant. It comes in the summers to breed and in the winter migrates south to Africa and Asia.
In Greece, it is found in large wetlands (Evros, Nestos Delta, and elsewhere). The species is threatened mainly by the drainage and exploitation of its wetlands, but also - to a lesser extent - by illegal hunting.
