The pied avocet (Lat. Recurvirostra avosetta), also known as "Lord of the swamps", due to its impressive appearance and striking walking mode, is a wader with characteristic black and white plumage and long green-blue legs. Its main feature, however, is its long, slender, and curved upwards beak. Avocets nest in colonies, in coastal wetlands, especially in salty lagoons or salt marshes. In winter, they find shelter in lakes. In Thrace, avocet breeding grounds are located in the area of Porto Lagos.
According to national and international law, the pied avocet is a protected species and is included in the Red Book of Endangered Vertebrates in Greece. It is protected under Directive 79/409/EEC and the Berne Convention for the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats (1979).
