The great cormorant (lat. Phalacrocorax carbo) also known locally as black cormorant (Australia), or black shag (New Zealand) or large cormorant (India) and also formerly referred to as the great black cormorant, is a big seabird with black plumage and yellow and olive shades at the base of its beak. Its main characteristic is the green color of its eyes. When swimming, the only thing that protrudes above the surface of the water is the long neck and its head. It lives in many places in Europe, Asia, Africa as well as on the East Coast of North America.
In the region of Thrace, the great cormorant lives near wetlands such as the Evros Delta, Lake Vistonida, Porto Lagos, the lagoons of the regional unit of Rodopi, and Nestos Delta. In these areas, it lives in mixed colonies with herons and spoonbills.
