The hen harrier (Latin name Circus cyaneus) is a diurnal bird of prey. It is found mainly in the northern hemisphere either as a migrant or as a permanent resident. It ranges in southern regions such as the Iberian Peninsula, France, Italy, the Balkans, the Middle East, Iraq, Iran, and as far east as Japan. For breeding, in summer, it prefers more northerly areas such as Siberia.
In Greece they prefer wetlands but are also found in other areas such as in mountains when migrating or in grasslands in the winter months when they are endemic birds.
