Gateluzzi Towers

Near the archeological site of Paleopolis, the three towers of Gateluzzi - also known as the towers of Paleopolis - are medieval monuments of Samothrace, from the time when the Genoese prevailed on the island after the Venetians, with rulers belonging to the house of Gateluzzi.

The Gateluzzi built the towers partly with ancient building materials from the adjacent archeological site. The aim was to protect the island from pirates and to secure their sovereignty. One of the three, 20 meters high, has a built-in goniolith with a relief inscription bearing the Gateluzzi coat of arms. This tower is almost intact, while only some ruins of the other two remain.
