So high that it hides the moon!
More than 1,600 meters high, Saos is the highest mountain of Samothrace and the third-highest of the island mountains of Greece. According to tradition, the mountain is so high that it hides the moon; therefore, its highest peak is called Feggari (Greek for Moon). According to mythology, the god Poseidon watched the Trojan War from the top of the peak Feggari.
Its slopes are covered with plane trees, which are favored by the existence of running water. The famous vathres, the natural pools formed by the waterfalls offer a sense of coolness. The mountain is a favorite among mountaineering enthusiasts. Mountaineering routes start from Therma, or Chora of Samothrace and are around 5 hours long.
