Queen Rhodope seating on a rock

On the reverse of a bronze coin dated to the time of the Roman emperor Antoninus Pius, a female figure is depicted, who is identified with the mythical queen of Thrace Rodopi, husband of Haemus. She is depicted sitting on a rock, on which she rests her right arm, while with her left hand she holds three flowers. There is a small tree behind her. The coin was issued by the Mint of Philippopolis, when the Province of Rhodope was ruled by M. Pontius Sabinus under the office of Legatus Augusti pro praetore provinciae Thraciae. The information is given by the coin itself, on which we read the inscriptions IΗΓΕΜ Μ ΠΟΝΤ ϹΑΒΕΙΝΟV ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΠΟ and ΡΟΔΟΠΗ.
