Δύο θάλασσες βροντούν γύρω από τις ακτές του Ισθμού, η μία προς τη Δύση, αντίθετα από τον ποταμό Έφυρο, η άλλη προς την Ανατολή, την ονομάζουν Σαρωνίδα. Ανατολικά του Ισθμού απλώνεται η γη της Αττικής, που τη διασχίζει ο θεϊκός Ιλισσός ποταμός,  από εκεί κάποτε άρπαξε ο Βορέας την Ωρείθυια. Πιο πέρα βρίσκεται η χώρατων Βοιωτών και η καρποφόρα γη των Λοκρών, η Θεσσαλία και οι πόλεις της Μακεδονίας. Από εκεί φαίνονται οι χιονώδεις κορυφές του Αίμου στη Θράκη.

Two seas thunder around the shores of the Isthmus: one towards the sunset, opposite Ephyre; the other, which they call Saronic, towards the dawn. Beyond the Isthmus to the east lies the land of Attica, through which flows the stream of the divine Ilissus, from where Boreas once snatched Oreithyia. After this there is the plain of the Boeotians and the fruitful soil of the Locrians, and after these Thessaly and the cities of Macedonia. After this there appear the summits of snowy Haemus in Thrace.
