SUB IPSA ANTANDRO: iuxta Antandrum. Est autem civitas Phrygiae, dicta Antandros, vel quod de Andro insula eam condiderunt coloni, quasi anti Androu, vel quia Graeci venientes per Thraciam cepere Polydorum, pro cuius pretio hanc accepere civitatem, quae ex facto nomen accepit, Antandros, id est propter virum data: quamvis huic opinioni Vergilius non consentiat. Fertur tamen quod post acceptum pretium a Graecis occisus sit lapidibus. Alii a Polymestore occisum dicunt post eversam Troiam et in maria praecipitatum. Cuius cum mater Hecuba agnovisset cadaver, cum captiva duceretur, flendo in canem conversa est, cum se praecipitare vellet in maria: quod ideo fingitur, quia nimio dolore inaniter Graecis conviciabatur. Non nulli adserunt, Antandron insulam esse vicinam Troianis regionibus. Ab hac incolas coactos loci angustia ad vicina litora profectos civitatem Antandron ex nomine patriae condidisse.

SUB IPSA ANTANDRO: Δίπλα στην Άντανδρο. Υπάρχει μια πολιτεία της Φρυγίας, η οποία ονομάζεται Άντανδρος. Ονομάζεται έτσι, είτε επειδή την ίδρυσαν άποικοι του νησιού Άνδρος, σαν να λέμε, «αντί της Άνδρου», είτε, επειδή ήρθαν Αχαιοί να συλλάβουν τον Πολύδωρο και για αυτό κατέλαβαν και την πόλη, για να την ανταλλάξουν με αυτόν τον άνδρα. Από το γεγονός αυτό, εξαιτίας αυτού του άνδρα δηλαδή, δόθηκε αυτό το όνομα στην πόλη. Ωστόσο, ο Βιργίλιος δεν συμφωνεί με αυτήν την ερμηνεία. Αντίθετα, είναι της γνώμης ότι οι Αχαιοί τον λιθοβόλησαν μέχρι θανάτου, μόλις πήραν τον θησαυρό. Άλλοι λένε ότι δολοφονήθηκε από τον Πολυμήστορα, αφού καταλήφθηκε η Τροία και το πτώμα του ρίχτηκε στη θάλασσα. Όταν η μητέρα του Εκάβη αναγνώρισε το κουφάρι του, μόλις πιάστηκε αιχμάλωτη, θρηνούσε σαν σκυλί και ήθελε να γκρεμιστεί και η ίδια στο πέλαγος. Επειδή έμοιαζε με σκυλί που κλαίει, κανένας Έλληνας, λόγω του δυσβάσταχτου πόνου της, δεν ήταν δυνατόν να την προσβάλει. Κάποιοι υποστηρίζουν ότι το νησί της Άνδρου είναι κοντά στις περιοχές της Τροίας. Από την Άνδρο εξαιτίας της έλλειψης χώρου, αναγκάστηκαν να φύγουν οι κάτοικοι για τη γειτονική ακτή, έφτασαν εκεί, ίδρυσαν την Άντανδρο και την ονόμασαν έτσι από το όνομα της πατρίδας τους.

SUB IPSA ANTANDRO: Nest to Antandros. There is a city is in Phrygia which is called Antandros. It is called thus, either because it was founded by colonists from the island of Andros, as one might say “in place of Andros”, or because when Greeks came to seize Polydorus they captured the city so as to return it “in exchange for the man” (anti tou andros). Virgil, however, does not agree with this interpretation: in his opinion, the Greeks stoned him to death once they had secured the gold. Others say that after the fall of Troy he was killed by Polymestor and his corpse thrown into the sea. When his mother, Hecuba, who had just been made prisoner, recognised his body, she fell to howling like a dog and tried to throw herself into the sea as well; because of her overwhelming grief, none of the Greeks dared mock or revile her. Some say that the island of Andros is near the Troad and that want of space drove the islanders to cross to that neighbouring shore, where they founded a  city which they called Antandros, in honour of their homeland.
