Threiceius quondam vates fide creditur canora

Πιστεύουν ότι κάποτε ο θρακιώτης βάρδος με τη μελωδική του πειθώ συγκίνησε τις αισθήσεις των άγριων θηρίων και συγκράτησε τα νερά των περιπλανώμενων ποταμών αλλά και τα πετούμενα πουλιά και έσεισε με το τραγούδι του τα κουφά βράχια. Και λένε ότι τα δέντρα ακολούθησαν τους ρυθμούς της γλυκόηχης λύρας του και πρόσφεραν τη σκιά τους στον ποιητή. Καθόλου, βέβαια, δεν μπόρεσε να συγκινήσει όσα είναι χωρίς αίσθηση (οι ποιητές έπλασαν τον λόγιο μύθο), αλλά με τα μειλίχια λόγια του μαλάκωσε τις σκληρές καρδιές των ανθρώπων και με τη λόγια φωνή του ανακούφισε τη ζωή τους. Ο Ορφέας τους δίδαξε τη δικαιοσύνη, τους συγκέντρωσε όλους μαζί και εκπολίτισε τα άξεστα ήθη τους.

They believe that once the Thracian bard with his melodic persuasion touched the senses of the wild beasts and held back the waters of the wandering rivers and the flying birds, and soothed the hollow rocks with his song; and they say that the trees followed the rhythms of his sweet-sounding lyre and offered their shade to the poet. By no means, of course, could he move those who are without sense (poets have created this learned fable), but with his meek words he softened the hard hearts of men, and with his learned voice he soothed their lives. Orpheus taught them justice, gathered them all together and civilized their rude manners.
