Er<e>chtheus Pandionis filius habuit filias quattuor, quae inter se coniurarunt si una earum mortem obisset ceterae se interficerent. in eo tempore Eumolpus Neptuni filius Athenas venit oppugnaturus, quod patris sui terram Atticam fuisse diceret. is victus cum exercitu cum esset ab Atheniensibus interfectus, Neptunus ne filii sui morte Er<e>chtheus laetaretur expostulauit ut eius filia Neptuno immolaretur. itaque <Chth>onia filia cum esset immolata ceterae fide data se ipsae interfecerunt; ipse Er<e>chtheus ab Iove Neptuni rogatu fulmine est ictus.

ΕΡΕΧΘΕΑΣ

Ο Ερεχθέας, ο γιος του Πανδίωνα, είχε τέσσερις κόρες, οι οποίες έδωσαν μεταξύ τους την υπόσχεση ότι αν κάποια πεθάνει, οι άλλες θα την ακολουθούσαν αυτοκτονώντας. Εκείνη την εποχή ο Εύμολπος, γιος του Ποσειδώνα, ήρθε να πολεμήσει ενάντια στην Αθήνα, επειδή, όπως έλεγε, η Αττική ήταν η γη του πατέρα του. Όταν ο Εύμολπος με τον στρατό του νικήθηκε και σκοτώθηκε από τους Αθηναίους, ο Ποσειδώνας απαίτησε, για να μη χαίρεται ο Ερεχθέας με τον θάνατο του γιου του, να θυσιαστεί στο όνομά του η κόρη του Ερεχθέα. Έτσι, όταν η κόρη του, Χθονία, θυσιάστηκε, οι υπόλοιπες αδελφές, σύμφωνα με τους όρκους που είχαν δώσει, αυτοκτόνησαν. Ο ίδιος ο Ερεχθέας, μετά από αίτημα του Ποσειδώνα, κεραυνοβολήθηκε από τον Δία.

ERECHTHEUS

Erechtheus, son of Pandion, had four daughters who promised each other that if one died, the others would kill themselves. Eumolpus, son of Neptune, came to attack Athens because he said the Attic land was his father's. When he and his army were defeated and he was slain by the Athenians, Neptune demanded that Erechtheus' daughter be sacrificed to him so that Erechtheus would not rejoice at his son's death. And so when Chthonia, his daughter, had been sacrifised, the others in accordance with their oaths killed themselves. Erechtheus himself at Neptune's request was smitten with a thunderbolt by Jove.
